Random Weirdness: The Magic Man

Growing up, we were basically a JCPenney and Sears kind of  family.  Too bad, because looking back they were a bit on the stuffy side.  I really missed out by not having the Spiegel and Aldens catalogs around.  They were much livelier in their productions.  For example, check out Spiegel's Magic Man......

Kathy recoils in horror at the disembodied hand shoving a rabbit in her face.   You can just imagine her thinking "Oh gawd, not another creepy guy trying to use lame magic tricks to hit on me.  And is that rabbit, like, dead?!?!? Ewwwww!!!"

Creepy Magic Man (toupee included) can't take a hint and doesn't leave.  This time he's trying to impress them with the floating ball trick.  Kathy is probably thinking "Great, is he ever going to go away?  Am I supposed to not notice the 'invisible' wires?  Maybe I can pawn him off on the brunette?"

Apparently the gals did their own magic trick and made the creepy guy go away.  Kathy is kicking up her heels with joy.

Oh no, Magic Man is back and up to his old tricks of making animals appear - this time a dove.  All the gals seem pleased, perhaps because this time, he didn't accidentally kill it. Check out his outfit.  I guess he figured if the magic didn't make the ladies swoon, his keen fashion sense would win them over.

Oh, so much for the "magic".  Kathy is simply handing him the doves.  Maybe he decided to not take any chances after the fiasco with Fluffy the Rabbit.

Finally, Magic Man gives up trying to impress the ladies with his sleight of hand trickery.  Was it the dead rabbit that turned them off?  Or maybe the not-so-hidden invisible wires?  Or maybe the fact that Kathy was just handing him the doves?  Or his toupee?  Or his impeccable fashion style?  Well, we'll never know.  The gals seem relieved not to have him bugging them anymore.  Wait, what's that smell?  WHAT, he left the dead rabbit behind!  Ewwwwwww!

That's So 70s: Jaunty Jumpsuits - Part 2!

Well what better subject to look at this week than that weird little 70s fashion trend - jumpsuits!  And not just any jumpsuits, oh no, indeedie no.  We're going to explore a fashion within a fashion, an oddity within an oddity, dare I say -  a dream within a dream.  What the heck am I talking about?  Well it's jumpsuits as FORMAL wear.  Let's "jump" to it!

All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream..... Upon seeing Kathy in this snappy formal jumpsuit set, perhaps they are, indeed, a dream within a dream....

It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma......Yep, that not only applies to foreign policy, but also to jumpsuits as formal wear.  "Jump into jumpsuit glamor"? you betcha!

You're once, twice, three times a lady....Three of our K Clubbers elegantly attired with two (Karen and Colleen) in flowingly formal jumpsuits!

Pool party baby, it was a cool party, cool pool party, la, la, la, Pool Party Baby......  Even for poolside events at the country club, jumpsuits were the "in" fashion in formal wear back in the 70s (1).  Looks like Karen's jumpsuit is missing some pieces (strategically placed!).

More elegance - jumpsuit style!  This time featuring Karen and Kay.  Like other formal jumpsuit attire, note the long, flowing, bell-bottomed pant legs.

Jumpsuit Elegance says it all!  Speaking of elegance in jumpsuits......

Oh my!  I think that they must have worked on Dottie's hair for an hour to get it to stay in that position! Either that or she was jumping around too much!

I know, I know, this post has been a little light on Kathy pics. sooooooo.....

Quoth the Raven, nevermore.....You're probably thinking I've lost my mind (2).  What, pray tell, could the tie-in possibly be to that poem.  Well, if you must ask, Kathy is in canary yellow, and a canary is a bird (like a raven). Also, I had Edgar Alan Poe on my mind from the quote on the first pic so, voila, The Raven just fell out. That and Kathy is always "raven-ously" beautiful.  Okay, okay, time to wrap this post up.

footnotes:

(1) Sharp eyed readers of this blog will recognize the eye catching jumpsuit that Colleen sports here as appearing in the previous post on jumpsuits worn by Kay - must have been popular!

(2) I understand that I've opened myself up to lots of snarky comments with that one.  I accept that, it's part of the business of blogging.

K Club Special Part 4 - Kathy Loghry!

Welcome to our 1st Year Anniversary Special?  To kick off the 2nd year of this blog in style, we'll complete our initial round of K Club Specials (1) with a look at Kathy!

Enjoy!

We know Kathy mostly from her extensive catalog modeling career.  She was everywhere during the early to late 70s in catalogs of all shapes and sizes.  Here is a fantastic shot of her from an Aldens catalog.  This pic has it all - the effervescent smile, the natural elegance, and the iconic beauty that made Kathy so popular!

Let's take a look back on her career!

The year 1968 was a big one for Kathy. She competed in two major national contests.  One has been covered in a previous post - the NCAA Centinnial Queen competition.  Although she didn't win, she snared one of the two runner up positions.  Here is a link to that post (2).......

In addition, she competed that year in a model search competition called Model of the Year that was sponsored by the Stewart Agency.  It was kind of a cross between America's Next Top Model and American Idol.  She made the finals which were held in NYC and broadcast on TV.  The thing was won by someone named Cybil Shepard (yeah, I never heard of her either).   However, all the finalists got modeling contracts.

Here's a page from the Seventeen Magazine article on the affair.  Kathy is on the second column, third from the bottom.

A closeup......

A color closeup........

That launched her modeling career. (3)  Here is an early composite pic of her!

You gotta love the tee-shirt!

Like many of the other models of that era, she did some work for Seventeen magazine....

I'm not sure what this is all about except that there is no way this guy is going to play house (or whatever the heck they are doing) unless there's a pretty gal like Kathy around, just doesn't happen.

Also like the other K-Clubbers, she was in a ton of print ads...

This ad is just awesomeness cubed!  Let's set the scene.  The dude has a large wiener (the hot dog, not the politician) and is holding it up high and proud . Meanwhile, Kathy has a much, much smaller wiener speared by a pitchfork.  And she is shoving that right in the poor shmuck's face while laughing an evil little laugh.  The message here is not so subtle - don't fool with a woman while she's taking Midol!  Based on the crowd's reaction, it is a total fail on the guy's part!

Kathy was literally everywhere during her career.

I doubt that you'd see the top models of today pop up in places like this!  I remember seeing her pic on things like hair care products, etc.

Of course, we here at this blog know Kathy best from all the groovy fashions of the 70s catalogs...

Here is an early pic from Sears...

Such a serious expression!.  Where did that million dollar smile go?

There it is! And with the wind (or at least a fan) in her hair!

The last catalog pics that I have of her come from 1979, so that is quite a long career!  Here is a pic from near the end of that career in 1978....

Still graceful!

And like many of the other models of that era, when her career ended, she sort of fell from public view.  This snippet from National Enquirer 1978 is the only info I have about her besides her photos.  Oh well, we still have plenty of groovy pics of her and the other K-Clubbers from the 70s to remember those halcyon days!

footnotes:

(1) For those of you new to this blog, K Club is the name I give to four of the main catalog models of the 70s: Kathy Loghry, Karen Bruun, Kay Campbell, and Colleen Corby.  All their names begin with a hard K sound, hence the name.  I've a special post on each one's career, and I plan to do more posts on the other catalog models whose names don't begin with a hard K sound (honorary K Club members).

(2) A link to post with more links, yeah I know.  However, be sure to read some of the articles in those NCAA Newsletters.  They are pretty funny in their own right.

(3) Well it launched her career as far as I know.  She may have done some modeling before that but I have no record of any.

The Year in Review

As ya'll probably have figured out, I have carefully avoided re-post pics.  However, since this is the last post of the year (yeah it's been one year already!), we'll take a look back at some of our favorites from the last 12 months.  It's pretty difficult to choose from all the 70s craziness, but these just sorta stood out.

Be sure to tune in next week (same bat time, same bat channel) when we kick off our second year with our 1st anniversary blowout spectacular!  In the mean time, enjoy some of these highlights of year one.....

Of course this pic is going to make the short list!  I assume that the lobster was quite tasty!

Nothing says 70s fashion fun quite like this pic!

A really, really nice pic of Kathy and Karen!

Kathy and Kay in evening wear.  Yeah!

Bodysuits, always a popular theme (except, based on the comments, from those gals who actually tried to wear them).

Things looked bad when we were sucked into the alternate reality of a Plaid, Plaid World.  However, somehow we survived.

Kathy, summertime, 'nuff said.

Fashion as Couples Therapy was a surprise hit.  However with awesomely groovy His N' Her coordinates like these, you can see why!

Maternity wear wasn't the most popular theme, but nobody can complain about this pic!

Kathy, Karen, and Colleen.  White with Brights indeed!

Classic Kathy catalog pic!

Of course I'm going to end with a swimwear pic! Duh!

Many thanks to all the fans and followers of this blog.  I admit that this whole thing started off without a whole lot of planning (in other words, late on a Friday night after a few beers).  However, I have had great fun doing it.  A year ago, I would have never dreamed that this little blog would experience the growth that it has.  Once again many thanks to all who made that happen.

I really look forward to year two with more new pics, continuation of our old themes, and perhaps some new themes to explore!

P.S.  According to last week's poll, the consensus was that the black and white photo was definitely Kathy. The Lee Jeans ad got some votes.  The Woman's Day pic got a vote, but the others were not Kathy according to our readership.  Thanks for voting!
