Summertime Fun is Couples Time Fun (Part 9)

Ahhh, summer.  The word conjures up long, hot, lazy days of fun in the sun.  And what better way to enjoy with that special someone.

Yep, tennis, golf, or just hanging out at the beach..... Wait, this has been the summer of the shark! On SyFy they've been running all of their classics for Shark Week.  Classics like Sharktopus, Gint Shark, Swamp Shark, Ghost Shark, Mega Shark, Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus, Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus, Mega Shark vs Mecha Shark....you get the idea (1).

And if I've learned anything by watching hours of these flicks, is that they always start out with a group of unruly teenagers playing around at the beach.  It gets ugly from there - fast.  In fact, it appears that the guy has already been victimized by a flying shark attack to the head! (2)

Down on the boardwalk, out by the sea.....What a perfect way to end a day of fun by the beach than by a visit to the boardwalk.  And in those funky clothes no less.  No way the sharks will find you here.  Well, except that those sharks can fly.....

Okay, enough of the sharks, I promise.  Really, I do.

After a tough day at the beach or the boardwalk, what better way to relax than with a fruity cocktail. And in this case, it's really fruity - like all fruit, which kinda goes with the guy's shirt somehow.  Still he's doing something right.  Because once you get the girl laughing, well, you got the girl.

Looks like Karen attracted a crowd.  And, hey, isn't that guy on the left the same one that was smoozing Kay?

Okay, this is getting ridiculous.  Now he's with Colleen?  Man he gets around.  I think we found the REAL shark of this story.  Changing into his motor cross muscle shirt, he also bats both ways... lets not go there! (3)

Now with Kathy! What's that guy's secret?  He's stolen the thunder of Shark Week and made it his own (even in flannel shirts.)

What kind of man reads JCPenney's Summer catalog?  His coy grin perfectly matches his fashionable tunic shirt conveying a laid back 'tude that belies the girl-crushing predator beneath.  He is the Shark and the Nado of summer -  circling the open water and rounding up all the lovely fishes of the sea!

(1) Yes, those are the titles of actual movies.  And I'm a bit ashamed to admit that I've seen them all!

(3) Be sure to check out the small pic of Kathy in the upper right.  Now, how many times in those shark movies did things take a horrible turn for the worse when all the teenagers board the party boat?  Usually right after this, a lot of fake blood ends up in the water. The horror, the horror.

Random Weirdness: Say Yes to the Dress - Part 3!

Ahh, July is definitely the month for weddings (okay there are more weddings in June, but hey, let's not get picky.)  And with recent developments on the marriage scene, it's the perfect time to look back on how we got married in the 70s!

Of course the bride is beautiful because it's Kathy! duh!  In the traditional long dress or.....hey wait a minute.....is that a wedding mini in the corner?!?!?   All I can say is "That's sooo 70s!"

Even at weddings, the 70s had a style all it's own.....

For example, the groomsmen were always well dressed in the finest polyester leisure suits that one could purchase form a catalog!

And the bride always had choices - as long as it was polyester.  At least the price was right:$55.00 for the dress, $35.00 for the headpiece.  Hmmm, maybe that would work when my daughters get married, then again maybe not.

Hey, this Penney's wedding dress is from 6 years earlier, and it's $10.00 more?  What gives?

More wedding minis!!  The moms do NOT seem pleased!

Let's not forget the bridesmaids dresses.  The goal here is to make them buy something that is completely impractical for any other occasion except maybe an antebellum southern ball.

I rest my case...........

We began with Aldens, why not end that way?  Here we have Karen as the bride and Kathy as a bridesmaid.  Even back then it was all about the dress as in "Say Yes to The Dress."  I always had a sneaky feeling that the whole thing was about that!  And know you know........

In The Summertime!

when the weather is hot,
You can stretch right up and touch the sky
When the weather's fine, you....

got women, you got women on your mind!
Have a drink, have a drive,
Go on out and see what you can find.

If her daddy's rich take her out for a meal
if her daddy's poor just do what you feel
Speed along the lane
Do a ton an' twenty-five
When the sun goes down
You can make it, make it good in a lay-by

We're no threat, people
We're not dirty, we're not mean

We love everybody but we do as we please
When the weather's fine
We go fishin' or go swimmin' in the sea
We're always happy
Life's for livin' yeah, that's our philosophy (1)

Sing along with us
Dee dee dee-dee dee

Dah dah dah-dah dah
Yeah we're hap-happy
Dah dah-dah
Dee-dah-do dee-dah-do dah-do-dah
Dah-do-dah-dah-dah
Dah-dah-dah do-dah-dah (2)

When the winter's here, yeah it's party time
Bring your bottle, wear your bright clothes
It'll soon be summertime
And we'll sing again
We'll go drivin' or maybe we'll settle down
If she's rich, if she's nice
Bring your friends and we'll all go into town

In the summertime when the weather is hot
You can stretch right up and touch the sky

When the weather's fine
You got women, you got women on your mind
Have a drink, have a drive
Go out and see what you can find (1)

K Club Special - Part 19: Karen Bruun - Part 3

We continue our third round of K Club Specials focusing on the big four.  And once more we'll take a look at Karen's extensive career!

A JCPenney's pic of Karen from early in the 70s.

And another pic of Karen from Sears in the mid-70s.  Very nice!!

But she was more than just a catalog model.  During her career, she would pop up everywhere - like here for Simplicity.

Karen in an ad for Turtle Bax - naturally there is a turtle included!  The turtle looks happy, and why wouldn't he?  After all, he gets to hang with Karen and Pat!!

And here for Hanes.  Anyone remember those Cracked Animal stickers?  They are vaguely familiar.

A really fantastic pic of Karen and Colleen from Spiegel.  Spiegel always went for that Uptown Girl classy look, and they succeeded here for sure!

For some reason I really like this pic of Karen.  She seems so relaxed and comfortable.  She was a natural for the look that Spiegel was trying to project.

Even when they were casual, Spiegel was classy and sophisticated....

Okay, okay, maybe they weren't always that classy.  I have no idea why that guy is laying on the ground, and now Karen (as well as Shelley and the other model) don't look that much at ease here.   Perhaps that will do it for Spiegel in this post!

Of course, that didn't mean that Sears couldn't try for that classy look - like here with the long dresses.  Hmmm, let's see.  We've seen Karen with Colleen and now with Kay.  Seems like we we are missing someone?

Yep. How can you have a special on Karen without including Kathy?  They appeared together so many time in catalogs such as here in Aldens.  These two were certainly "snappy" indeed!!
